Who We Are: The NDWA DMV Chapter
NDWA was founded in 2007 by organizers and worker leaders in six cities, representing nannies, house cleaners, and care workers. Today, it is an alliance of more than 76 organizations across 22 states, representing 395,000 domestic workers nationwide. We are a multi-racial, multi-lingual organization building a powerful movement rooted in the human rights, dignity, and equality of domestic workers, care workers, immigrant women, and women of color.
The Washington DC–Virginia–Maryland (DMV) Chapter organizes domestic workers — nannies, house cleaners, and caregivers — to fight for better wages, respect, and safe working conditions.
We’ve led historic victories:
- In 2022, we won the DC Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, which ended the exclusion of domestic workers from basic legal protections in the District.
- In 2021, we helped pass the Virginia Domestic Workers Bill of Rights — the first in the South.
- In Maryland, we won new laws for caregivers that prevented misclassification, laid the foundation for higher wages, and created a new government structure to ensure caregivers’ voices were directly heard by policymakers.
We provide spaces for community connection and individual support for domestic workers. We offer workforce development and leadership training opportunities to help you build your skills and power as a domestic worker. Our meetings and trainings are multilingual and open to all domestic workers, regardless of immigration status.
