WASHINGTON – Following today’s Supreme Court decision in Mullin v. Doe and Trump v. Miot, which reversed delays to ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrian and Haitian nationals, Care for Seniors, Care for America – a national coalition of senior care providers, care worker organizations, employers, immigrant rights advocates, and labor groups – released the following statement:
“Today’s decision will cost us all. Not only does it destabilize the lives of TPS holders who have built families, careers, and communities in the United States, but it also threatens the care infrastructure that seniors, disabled people, families, and providers rely on every day.
With America’s population aging and aging service providers struggling to fill positions, the loss of experienced care workers is an enormous setback; this ruling will result in broken relationships, lost jobs, and widening gaps in available staff. Over 20% of Haitians nationwide work in healthcare, with them filling around 111,000 healthcare positions in the United States in 2023.
Every person deserves the opportunity to build a life here. TPS holders are our neighbors, our family members, and our friends who make our communities stronger. They have spent years contributing to this country, and represent the ideals of humanitarian protection and prosperity in American democracy. They often take care of our loved ones, providing care and services to older adults–and are critical to the infrastructure of aging services in the U.S. At a time when workforce shortages continue to increase across healthcare, today’s decision deepens an already strained care economy and creates profound uncertainty for the tens and thousands of care workers and provider employers who depend on TPS holders. Removing TPS holders’ work authorization will destabilize communities and also exacerbate the current care crisis.
For TPS holders, caregiving and other jobs in the aging services sector are professional opportunities through which they support families, contribute to local economies, and provide critical services that millions of Americans rely on every day.
This decision is part of a broader pattern of immigration rulings and aggressive tactics causing chaos for care workers, families, and providers. Care for Seniors, Care for America urges Congress and the administration to protect TPS holders and preserve protections for immigrant care workers.”
Over the past few months, the Coalition has continued to host multiple events across the country alongside bipartisan lawmakers. Most recently, they gathered at the U.S. Capitol with Representative Ayanna Pressley shared, this issue is deeply personal: “In the final weeks of my mother’s life… it was Haitian nurses who prayed over my mother, who sang songs to my mother.”
