“Devastating”: National Domestic Workers Alliance Blasts House Bill to Gut Medicaids

Newly released bill text lays out cuts that would deny millions of children, older adults, and people with disabilities lifesaving care & put in-home health care out of reach

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Domestic Workers Alliance, released the following statement on bill text released by the Energy and Commerce Committee that details devastating cuts to Medicaid:

“We know that without Medicaid, 72 million Americans will lose health care coverage they desperately need and otherwise couldn’t afford. Each of those Americans has a story, a family who loves them, and a community who needs them. We’re talking about grandparents, children with serious medical needs, and people with disabilities who can live their lives because of Medicaid.

The National Domestic Workers Alliance represents millions of care workers who help make this possible by providing in-home care for older adults and people with disabilities who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford these services. Our workers who provide this essential care rarely get health care benefits from their jobs, and so they also rely on Medicaid to get health care for themselves and their families.

This devastating bill, which for the first time puts specifics behind the huge Medicaid cuts Congress is considering, would pull the rug out from under workers and families all across the country, costing everyday people their lives and livelihoods all to fund tax breaks for billionaires.

If the many lawmakers on the Energy and Commerce Committee who told their constituents they opposed Medicaid cuts were serious, they’ll vote no on this bill and stop it from getting a single step closer to becoming law.”
