Tell DC Councilmembers: Protect DC Domestic Workers Bill of Rights

All hands on deck! In 2022, the DC Council passed the historic DC Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, and a key victory in that law was the creation of a program to make the rights of this new law a reality for domestic workers.

The Mayor’s FY27 budget proposes to eliminate programs to help domestic workers understand and access their hard-won rights.

These programs work because they meet DC residents where they are, offer multilingual materials and trainings, and use innovative outreach strategies to engage hard to reach workers across the District.

In just one year (FY25), the grant programs collectively funded:

  • 93 workplace rights trainings
  • 45 trainings specifically for domestic workers to know their rights and 16 trainings for domestic employers to know their responsibilities
  • 199 legal services clients
  • Distribution of 21,324 know-your-rights materials
  • Plus digital outreach, street canvassing, peer-sharing, and community events

The Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety must reverse these cuts totalling $1.1M to make these two programs whole and preserve access to safe and just workplaces for all DC workers.
