As Lawmakers Prioritize Redistricting, Families Demand Action on Child Care and Medicaid

RALEIGH, NC — While lawmakers in Raleigh focus on redrawing political maps, North Carolina’s families, care workers, and providers are facing a crisis that can’t wait.

More than 3,000 child care centers are at risk of closure as federal relief funds expire, threatening care for nearly 90,000 children. At the same time, Medicaid providers have already experienced drastic cuts, jeopardizing home care for aging adults and people with disabilities who rely on these services to live with dignity.

This week, the National Domestic Workers Alliance and We Dream in Black North Carolina joined 18 other organizations in Raleigh for a day of action demanding that the General Assembly fund care and end the budget gridlock that’s putting lives and livelihoods at risk.

The National Domestic Workers Alliance and We Dream in Black North Carolina released the following statement:

“The legislature has failed to do the most basic part of its job — pass a budget that funds care. Families are losing access to child care, aging adults and people with disabilities are losing care at home, and workers are losing income. This is what political gridlock looks like in real life.

Advocates, including NDWA, are calling for a state budget that reverses the Medicaid cuts, raises child care subsidy rates, and sets a statewide funding floor so centers can stay open and care workers can earn a living wage.

Care is what keeps North Carolina running. Without investment in care, there is no workforce recovery, no family stability, and no thriving North Carolina.”
