WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Domestic Workers Alliance and Caring Across Generations respond to the Trump administration giving personal data of immigrant Medicaid enrollees to deportation officials in the below joint statement:
“What we’re seeing is a chilling betrayal of trust. Medicaid is the heart of the American social contract – a promise we make to ourselves and future generations, that we will take care of each other. The decision to hand over the personal health care data of individuals who access the program puts the integrity of the entire program at risk. It sends a message that we cannot trust our programs to serve and protect us. It is not only morally indefensible, it also undermines the very foundation of our care systems and the promises this country was built on.
“This move attempts to shame and punish people for simply trying to live, work and care for themselves and their loved ones. Accessing basic human needs like health care should not put your life and family at risk. No one should have to choose between getting medical help and being torn from their home and families.
“We believe care is a human right not a tool for menacing and political messaging. In the name of protecting the integrity of our public programs, and the promises we make to each other and future generations, we call for an end to this violation of privacy.”
