In response to ICE workplace raids in the downtown Los Angeles area Friday, which led to mass protests, dozens of arrests, and the detainment of SEIU California and SEIU-USSW and SEIU-USSW President David Huerta, National Domestic Workers Alliance leaders Jenn Stowe, Executive Director, and Ai-jen Poo, President, released the following statement:
“The domestic workers movement is standing united in solidarity with the entire labor movement, calling for the immediate release of SEIU California and SEIU-USSW President David Huerta.
David is a beloved friend and courageous leader who has devoted his life to advocating for workers. His assault and detainment during the ICE raids in Los Angeles is horrifying and unacceptable.
The domestic workers movement, together with the entire labor movement, calls for the immediate release of SEIU California and SEIU-USSW President David Huerta.
David was protecting, as he always has, the basic human dignity and human rights of workers who were being targeted in ICE raids. His assault and detainment for exercising his right to peaceful protest during the ICE raids in Los Angeles is unacceptable.
Masked agents in military gear have descended upon communities and worksites around the country, creating chaos and instilling fear. Those in power want us to feel fear, but we know that coming together to protect each other is a powerful antidote. Peaceful protestors speaking out against the separation of families, the dehumanization of the people who keep Los Angeles running, from day laborers to care workers, and retaliation against those who have the courage to denounce unbridled abuse of power are not only within their rights, they are on the right side of history. Future generations are counting on us to come together, as we have before, to help our country live up to its aspirations of freedom and justice for all.”
