Washington, DC — Following Congressional passage of a deal to end the government shutdown, which would exclude an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies and spike health care premium costs for millions of Americans, the National Domestic Workers Alliance condemned the vote with this statement:
“A deal that insists Americans make a choice between the impossible – feeding their families or having affordable health care – is no deal at all.
For weeks, the country has been desperately waiting for leaders in Congress to do their jobs and come to the table to fight for a better life for the people they represent. And though we’re relieved to see the end of a government shutdown that saw hundreds of thousands of government workers furloughed and millions struggling to put food on the table due to suspended SNAP benefits, this is simply not a solution that puts families and workers first, especially the 2.2 million domestic workers we represent who often do not receive health care through their employers and rely on health care marketplaces as a lifeline.
This is not a tradeoff we are willing to accept. We hold our leaders accountable – they answer to us. And right now, we are loudly demanding they get back to the table and work through a plan that will lower health care costs for all America’s working families.”
