March Madness With NDWA!

February was a very eventful month for our chapter.  In addition to launching our new Leadership Committee, we also launched our new campaign!  Find out more about the survey and storytelling work we are embarking on below.

This month, we are focusing on connecting domestic workers to jobs.  We are spending much of the month offering opportunities for domestic workers to get ready for the marketplace in advance of our hiring fair at the end of the month.  Keep reading for more info.

We have been reaching out to past members and allies to bring them back into the fold.  If you haven't heard from us yet via email or phone, we will be in touch within the next few weeks.

There are lots of opportunities for you and your colleagues to get involved this month.  We hope to see you!

Telling Domestic Workers' Stories

We are continuing our survey and storytelling project.  We will be surveying current domestic workers throughout the state about wages, benefits, and working conditions.  We hope to collect enough surveys to get a good picture of the state of domestic workers in Georgia.

Last month, our members were trained to conduct surveys and to conduct interviews using StoryCorps' StoryKit.  We would love to interview you or your loved one about your experiences as a domestic worker.

The survey is currently available online, or you can reach out to Tamika or Jacklyn if you would like to fill it out in person.

If you are interested in being a part of the survey and storytelling project, contact Tamika at 404-584-0840 or tamika@domesticworkers.org.

CPR Certification

Need to renew your CPR certification?  CPR Trainer Evans Pollard will return to conduct a class for domestic workers.  Participants will be trained in First Aid, AED, and Adult/Infant/Child CPR.  Cost is $15 for members, and $25 for nonmembers.  Those who have been inactive for the past year will need to renew their membership in order to receive the membership price.  Payment is due ASAP to reserve your spot.  Call 404-584-0484 or email atlanta@domesticworkers.org to register.

MEMBER MEETING

Join us on Saturday, March 18 for our Monthly Member Meeting. New Member Orientations will begin at 10, and regular meetings will begin at 10:30 and last until 1 pm.  The new longer meeting schedule will allow us to talk about our chapter activities, campaigns, and also do political education together so that we can build our analysis of the systems that shape our lives.  As always, a light breakfast will be served and children are welcome.

HIRING FAIR

On March 25, 2017, the Atlanta WeDiB Chapter of NDWA will host our 1st Hiring Fair! We are excited to host this event to connect Domestic Workers that are seeking employment with agencies or persons who are looking to hire skilled and available employees. There will be several employers from agencies seeking Nannies, Housecleaners, and Home Care workers. We have invited agencies and persons that recognize and honor the value of domestic work and agree to ensuring fair pay, dignity, and respect in the workplace of Domestic Workers.

In advance of the Hiring Fair, we will be offering domestic workers assistance to build their portfolios.  Join us on Thursday, March 23 at 6:30 pm for another Portfolio Party!  We will have wine and light refreshments.  Bring your resumes, cover letters, reference letters, and any other supporting documents printed or on a flash drive.  You can also email them to Jacklyn.

Members who need support in updating their resumes or cover letters should contact Jacklyn to make an appointment for assistance.

Contact Jacklyn at 404-584-0840 or jacklyn@domesticworkers.org for more info.
