The National Domestic Workers Alliance (www.domesticworkers.org) organizes domestic workers in the United States for respect, recognition and labor standards. We work to guarantee labor protections for domestic workers by winning legislation at the state level, pushing for regulatory changes at the national level, through the International Labor Organization at the global level, and elevating domestic workers as key leaders in building a powerful movement for social and global justice. The Alliance formed in 2007 at the US Social Forum and currently represents 60 affiliates, 3 chapters and a growing list of other worker organizing projects in more than 20 states.
Since its inception, NDWA has been an alliance of independent affiliate organizations--including 10 organizations in California, which together form the California Domestic Worker Coalition (CDWC). Recently, NDWA launched our membership program and set the goal of recruiting 200,000 workers to join NDWA directly. Now domestic workers who live in regions without affiliates can to join NDWA, helping the domestic worker movement build the power necessary to successfully advance an ambitious agenda for social and economic justice. California is the state with the largest number of domestic workers in the country, and growing our base in California will be a key to increasing our power nationally.
The primary focus of the Organizer’s work will be to build a domestic worker base in San Jose/the South Bay, and to develop campaign and organizing plans in that area. Secondarily, the organizer will work with NDWA’s digital team to raise the visibility of NDWA with domestic workers in several key parts of California where there is domestic worker density but no NDWA affiliate, and to engage the workers who are recruited through these efforts in events and campaign activities of the CDWC.
The Organizer will be part of NDWA’s field, membership and organizer teams. In addition, the Organizer will work in close coordination and collaboration with the staff of the CDWC.
Develop an organizing program to build a base of NDWA members in the South Bay/Peninsula region, including:
- Conduct mapping of the region (including areas of domestic worker and employer density, domestic worker serving organizations, key media outlets)
- Implement an outreach plan that utilizes both online and offline tools to engage domestic workers
- Develop organizing campaigns for this particular region based on learning in the mapping phase
- Identify and provide support for worker leaders in the region. Carry out leadership development activities.
- Engage contacts and members from various other parts of the state in CDWC and NDWA campaign activities related to enforcement of the California Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. This includes bringing members together several times per year at CDWC regional convenings and connecting emerging leaders with NDWA resources for worker-led, local distributed organizing.
- Produce reports on progress made and learnings about the field in California.

- 3+ years experience in an organizer role in a social justice organization
- Experience with campaign development
- Experience with developing and implementing outreach plans and membership-building programs
- Research and field mapping experience
- Skill and experience with leadership training and support for grassroots leaders
- Bilingual English/Spanish
- Excellent writing, editing, translation/interpretation and verbal communication skills in both languages
- Proficiency with technology for remote communications, meetings, webinars, project management
- Experience with database management for organizing
- Excellent time & project management skills
- Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
- Familiarity with the domestic worker sector and movement preferable but not required
