Position Summary: 

The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the leading national voice for dignity and fairness for domestic workers in the United States. Founded in 2007, NDWA works for the respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections of domestic and home care workers across the country. NDWA is winning improved working conditions while building a powerful movement rooted in the human rights, dignity and equality of domestic workers, home care workers, immigrant women and Black women.

NDWA was founded in 2007 by domestic workers and organizers from around the country.  Our national alliance has grown from this founding group of 13 organizations to now more than 60 affiliate organizations, plus local chapters developed by NDWA in Atlanta, Durham, Washington DC and New York City, and individual members from states without affiliates or chapters to join. To date, the Alliance is comprised of more than 70,000 nannies, housekeepers, and home care workers in 44 cities and 20 states.

Care in Action is a (501c4) nonprofit, nonpartisan group dedicated to fighting for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in the United States, most of whom are women. Founded in 2016, Care in Action is backed by tens of thousands of nannies, house cleaners, and care workers across the country. We provide the tools, trainings, and community working families need to make their voices heard, and organize and advocate for respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections.

NDWA Labs is the innovation arm of the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA). Founded in 2015, NDWA Labs was launched to experiment with new strategies for improving marketplace norms for domestic workers, including launching sustainable ventures and collaborating with the private sector. Our approach is to innovate, build smart and practical tools and products, and form private sector partnerships that help us reach and lift standards for domestic workers. In particular, NDWA Labs has been experimenting with ways to use technology to ensure we are shaping a future of work that works for all of us, not just some of us. NDWA Labs is an LLC that is single member-owned by Care in Action (501c4). 

NDWA seeks a passionate leader who can work with key stakeholders in developing solutions to overcome potential obstacles; successfully implement initiatives making HR initiatives accessible and efficient for all employees, and oversees workplace policies and procedures.  The ideal candidate has experience in non-profit and progressive organizations where HR departments are guided by the organization’s values and priorities, and understands the complexities of an organization with campaign, in-person and digital organizing, policy advocacy, communications, culture change, and deep leadership development.

The Human Resources Manager will report directly to the Senior Human Resources Director and work as part of the Human Resources Department to support all three entities, ensure consistent and timely communication and coordination throughout the organization.

Responsibilities: 

The HR Manager leads on all aspects of new hires including review of job announcements for FLSA status, experience level and salary guidelines for all three entities and coordinates with all managers/supervisors to ensure smooth hiring and onboarding of all staff.

  • Communicate with hiring manager(s), participate in initial job interviews if needed to ensure candidates meet the needs of the position and the larger organizational priorities.
  • HR Manager will coordinate all aspects of new employee onboarding including sending hire documents, uploading staff into HRIS or PEO coordinating with tech and ops; and ensuring that all new employees are oriented.
  • HR Manager will bottom line communication and execution between entities, Finance and HR team to ensure that on and offboarding of all employees is completed in a compliant and thorough manner. 
  • Partner with and coach managers on performance review; offer tools and training, and provide ongoing communications with managers on performance expectations, and feedback, provide guidance and support in development of plans to emphasize employee success, and correct performance issues.
  • Consults with Senior HR Director on complex employee relations issues.
Job Requirements: 
  • 5+years of experience as an HR Generalist/Business Partner in a non-profit or similar background
  • Bachelor’s Degree in HR, Business, Organizational Development or equivalent preferred.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of federal, state and local legislation governing employment and labor relations, with experience in an HR department of a union employer preferred.
  • Partner with and coach new managers
  • Ability to forge  strong working relationships across teams and with various department leaders
  • Alignment with NDWA’s vision and values, including a commitment to economic, race and gender justice. 
  • Familiarity with the domestic worker sector and issues facing domestic workers and other low-wage workers.
  • Proven ability to learn quickly, work independently,  meet multiple deadlines with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work and collaborate with diverse staff, majority women of color-led organization, in person and remotely and as part of a high-performing team, in a fast-paced, experimental organization.
  • Experience with database management, record keeping, proficiency in Microsoft Office required and Google Suite preferred
  • Union experience preferred
  • Spanish proficiency a plus
