Position Summary: 

The National Domestic Workers Alliance (www.domesticworkers.org) organizes domestic workers in the United States for respect, recognition and labor standards. Through leadership development, strategic campaigns and alliance building, we seek to help build a powerful movement for social and global justice. The Alliance, formed in 2007 at the US Social Forum, currently represents 45 affiliates in 26 cities and 18 states nationally.

The National Domestic Workers Alliance is seeking a Black Organizing Director to lead NDWA’s We Dream in Black initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to strengthen and expand our base of Black domestic workers. Given the legacy of Black women in domestic work, and the ongoing ways in which race shapes the conditions and experiences of workers, NDWA has prioritized the development of a strong race analysis and clear vision for organizing a workforce that is racially and culturally diverse. NDWA’s vision for a healthy multiracial democracy, one that includes real opportunity and equity for Black communities, takes into account the particular histories of Black women in the US.  To this end, we are investing in developing effective strategies and models for organizing Black domestic workers. Building upon the work of NDWA’s Atlanta-based chapter, as well as the organizing of Afro-Caribbean workers in New York City, we now seek to further develop our organizing of Black domestic workers, support the leadership of Black members, and implement strategies that are culturally relevant and authentic to Black domestic workers.

Responsibilities: 
  • Oversee & support affiliate chapters in New York City, Seattle, Raleigh/Durham, Atlanta, and Miami. Oversee development of new chapters in Boston and Detroit.
  • Guide chapters campaigns and strategic growth
  • Supervision of chapter directors and organizers
  • Oversee growth of  program and membership base
  • Annual and quarterly reporting
  • Work with membership department and help to implement digital strategy
  • Build alliances and partnerships across sectors of the movement
  • Assist NDWA with incorporating Black organizing into overall strategy
  • Co-create/design/inform communications strategy
  • Public face of program
  • Assist in fundraising 
Job Requirements: 
  • 8-10 years of community and/or labor organizing experience, particularly organizing in Black, low-income communities and/or organizing low-wage workers.
  • Deep understanding of issues facing Black (African-American and Black immigrant) low-wage workers and other communities of color.
  • Familiarity with the national organizing landscape in one or more of the following areas: domestic work, labor, gender justice, racial justice, and immigration.
  • Agreement and alignment with NDWA’s vision and values.
  • Excellent communication skills, active listener, ability to receive and give feedback.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well with others, build effective relationships, and foster leadership in others.
  • Good time management skills and ability to prioritize competing demands.
  • Experience in organizational development a plus, particularly as it relates to national/chapter/affiliate structures.
  • Dedication and ability to work flexible hours.
  • Proficiency with computer operations and programs.
  • Experience managing and expanding a national program
  • Able to work remotely
  • Experience supervising a team of 3 - 5 people
  • Strong writing skills (e.g grant reporting, etc..)
  • Strong verbal, written & interpersonal communication skills
  • Plus: Labor experience, strategic value of Black leadership, gender/intersectional analysis & practice
  • Self-started, self-managed
  • Forward thinking
  • Able to travel up to 50% of the time
