NY STATE SENATOR DIANE SAVINO JOINS “THE HELP” & TOM AMMIANO IN SACRAMENTO

After New York, CA Should Be Next to Pass Domestic Workers Bill of Rights

Sacramento, California – As thousands of Americans around the country watch the stories of African American domestic workers in Civil Rights Era in the Hollywood blockbuster, “The Help,” domestic workers in California are still fighting to gain protections and recognition in the workplace.  “California has the opportunity to help bring this workforce into the 21st Century,” says Grecia Lima, CA Domestic Workers Bill of Rights Campaign Director.

Domestic workers are an integral part of our state’s economy and the quality of care these workers provide depends on the quality of their jobs.  Many employers want to do the right thing but they don’t know how.  The California Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights (AB 889, Ammiano/V.M. Perez) has been introduced to grant equal protection to domestic workers and strengthen the quality of care in this vital industry.  The Bill has passed in the Assembly and in the Senate Labor Committee, and currently awaits a vote in the Appropriations Committee.
